Residency

Cyprus — Residency: Visa Overview

Cyprus issues residence permits through the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection to both EU and non-EU nationals. Non-EU citizens receive temporary residency permits (pink slip) renewable for 1–3 years, while EU/EEA/Swiss citizens register for Yellow Slip certificates under free-movement rules. Permanent residency and citizenship require separate applications.

Why this matters

The residence permit type determines your length of stay, renewal requirements, work rights, and pathway to permanent residency or citizenship.

Key facts

  • Non-EU nationals apply for temporary residence permits (Alien Registration Certificate/pink slip) through the Migration Department; EU/EEA citizens register for Yellow Slip under EU free-movement provisions (gov.cy/mip-md/en/)
  • Diplomatic missions abroad issue entry visas to non-EU citizens before arrival; residence permit applications are submitted in person at the Department of Migration or local Immigration Unit within Cyprus (gov.cy/mip-md/en/)
  • Applications for temporary residence cannot be submitted while holding a tourist/visitor visa — separate visas must expire or be cancelled first (gov.cy/mip-md/en/documents/visitors-and-family-members/)
  • EU/EEA citizens do not require visas and can enter with a national identity card; selected non-EU nationalities are visa-exempt depending on country lists maintained by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (gov.cy/mfa/en/)
  • Residence permit holders may re-enter Cyprus after up to three months abroad while permit remains valid (gov.cy/mip-md/en/)
  • Temporary residence permits require biometric data (photo, fingerprints, signature), valid travel document, and payment receipt for submission (gov.cy/mip-md/en/)
  • The Migration Department processes applications; processing time for residence and employment is set at one month (gov.cy/mip-md/en/)

Resident Types

Non-EU nationals (temporary pink slip), EU/EEA nationals (Yellow Slip), financially independent persons, students, employees, self-employed, family members, investors, and digital nomads each have separate visa/permit categories.
