Singapore — Tax: Tax Residency Rules
An individual is a Singapore tax resident for a Year of Assessment if physically present or exercising employment in Singapore for 183 days or more during the preceding calendar year. A foreigner working in Singapore for a continuous period straddling two calendar years, totaling at least 183 days, is also treated as a tax resident. Foreigners issued a work pass valid for at least 1 year are also treated as tax residents by default, though this is subject to review at tax clearance (when leaving the job/country).

Key facts
- 183+ days physically present or employed in Singapore in the preceding calendar year triggers tax residency.
- A continuous work period straddling two calendar years, totaling 183+ days, also qualifies for tax residency.
- Foreigners on a work pass valid for at least 1 year are treated as tax residents by default — subject to review at tax clearance.
- Tax clearance review can reclassify residency status if actual days/employment didn't meet the criteria.
Required documents
- Work pass (Employment Pass, S Pass, etc.) with validity of 1+ year for default resident treatment
- Travel/entry records for day-count verification
Common mistakes
- Assuming work pass validity alone permanently locks in resident tax treatment — it's reviewed and can be reclassified at tax clearance if actual presence didn't meet the 183-day threshold.
