Why this matters

A vehicle is often necessary for daily life, and transportation costs can be a significant expense for those not familiar with the local driving culture and regulations.

Key facts

  • Riders need a Gautrain Card with at least R38 loaded, or a contactless bank card, which covers train, bus and parking.
  • Rail users get reduced bus fares if they board within an hour of a train trip, and discounted parking if they exit within an hour of a train trip.
  • Gaubuses serve the stations except O.R. Tambo.
  • KlevaMova, launched May 2025, gives a 50% train-fare discount to qualifying low-income earners, scholars, pensioners and SASSA disability grant recipients.

Steps

  1. Obtaining a Driver's License — Relocating individuals must exchange their foreign driver's license for a South African license within 12 months of residency. The process involves applying to the South African License Issuing Authority and passing a driving test.
  2. Registering a Vehicle — To register a vehicle, relocating individuals must provide proof of ownership, obtain a Vehicle License, and register with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
