South Korea — Healthcare: Private Insurance

Korea's public NHIS is compulsory for most employed foreigners; private or foreign cover can replace it only where it provides equivalent medical benefits.

Why this matters

Relocating individuals to South Korea may need to consider private insurance options to ensure adequate coverage, especially if they plan to spend extended periods in the country or require specialized care.

Key facts

  • Employed foreigners and overseas Koreans at an insured workplace are compulsorily enrolled in NHIS; contributions are split 50/50 between employee and employer.
  • Exclusion is possible if foreign law, foreign insurance or an employer contract provides equivalent medical benefits.
  • Self-employed foreigners who have stayed in Korea over six months are subject to mandatory subscription (effective 16 July 2019).
  • Reduced contributions apply to some groups, including 30% for certain visa holders (D-6, G-1-6, G-1-12) and 50% for island or remote residents.
  • Private insurance is only recognised as a replacement for NHIS where it matches NHIS-level coverage.
