Residency

Uruguay — Residency: Visa Overview

Uruguay's main pathway for foreigners is legal residency (residencia legal), administered by the Dirección Nacional de Migración. Unlike many countries, there is no separate visa to apply for in advance — a foreigner can enter as a tourist and file the residency application from inside the country. The process does not require a large investment; the main requirement is proof of sufficient recurring income or means of support. Separately, Uruguay introduced a digital nomad permit (Decree 238/022) in 2023 for short remote-work stays that don't need the full residency process.

Key facts

  • There is no separate 'entry visa' most Western/Latin American nationalities need before arriving — many nationalities can enter visa-free as a tourist and file for residency from inside Uruguay.
  • The core requirement for legal residency is proof of sufficient income or means, not a specific investment amount.
  • Uruguay does not require applicants to renounce or disclose foreign income for the residency application itself — that is a separate tax-residency question (see the Tax category).
  • A digital nomad permit exists as a lighter-weight alternative for people who don't want to pursue full residency.
  • Uruguay is commonly cited as one of the more straightforward Latin American countries for residency by income, without requiring a minimum property purchase.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Uruguayan tax residency and immigration residency are the same process — they are legally distinct (see the Tax category's tax-residency topic).
