Cities

Where should I live?

Australia's population is concentrated in its state and territory capital cities. At 30 June 2025 the ABS estimated Greater Sydney at 5,638,830, Greater Melbourne at 5,435,590, Greater Brisbane at 2,833,524, Greater Perth at 2,452,765, Greater Adelaide at 1,491,015 and Canberra at 484,630. In 2024–25 Melbourne added the most people (about 105,000) and Perth grew fastest at 2.4%; capital city growth slowed from 2.3% to 1.8%, mainly because of lower net overseas migration, while regional Australia grew by about 94,700 people (1.1%).
