Residency

Australia — Residency: Work Visa

The main employer-sponsored temporary work visa is the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024. It has a Specialist Skills stream for occupations in major groups 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 earning above the Specialist Skills income threshold, a Core Skills stream, and a Labour Agreement stream that is to be replaced by an Essential Skills stream. Visa holders may work only in their nominated occupation, and the visa lasts between one and four years. Permanent skilled routes include the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) and the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189); check the Home Affairs site for current eligibility and whether other subclasses are open.
