Canada — Residency: Citizenship

Canadian citizenship is generally available to permanent residents who have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years immediately before applying, have filed federal taxes in at least 3 of those 5 years, and — if aged 18 to 54 — demonstrate adequate ability in English or French (CLB/NCLC level 4+) and pass the citizenship test. Applicants under 18 or 55 and older are exempt from the language and test requirements. As of 9 March 2026, IRCC made the online citizenship test the permanent default format, with up to three attempts before a hearing with a citizenship officer is scheduled.

Canada — Residency: Digital Nomad Visa

Canada does not currently operate a dedicated Digital Nomad Visa programme. Remote workers may be able to stay in Canada under existing immigration rules where their activities comply with Canadian immigration law, but long-term employment or residence generally requires an appropriate immigration pathway. Individuals intending to relocate permanently should consider the employment, business or permanent residence programmes administered by IRCC.

Canada — Residency: Permanent Residency

Canada provides multiple pathways to permanent residence through federal and provincial immigration programmes. Eligibility depends on the specific programme, the applicant's qualifications, work experience, language ability and other criteria established under Canadian immigration law. Permanent residents may live and work in Canada indefinitely, subject to meeting residency obligations. Permanent residence does not automatically confer Canadian citizenship.

Canada — Residency: Processing Times

As of mid-2026, IRCC processing times are: Express Entry permanent residence 6-8 months; new work permits applied for outside Canada 4-6 weeks; work permit extensions filed inside Canada around 7 months; study permits processed inside Canada about 7 weeks, with extensions around 70 days; Student Direct Stream (SDS)-eligible applicants (e.g. from India, China, the Philippines) around 20 days. IRCC publishes processing times weekly for temporary residence applications and monthly for permanent residence and citizenship applications, and times vary by application completeness and country of application. IRCC's official online checker is the only authoritative real-time source.

Canada — Residency: Required Documents

Exact document requirements vary by immigration pathway, but most Canadian immigration applications require a passport or travel document, police certificates, and (for economic pathways) proof of language ability, education credential assessment, and employment records. Police certificates are required from every country where an applicant lived 6+ consecutive months in the last 10 years, must be submitted as colour scans of the original (certified or notarized copies are rejected), and the certificate for the applicant's current country of residence must be dated within 6 months of application submission.

Canada — Residency: Retirement Visa

Canada does not operate a dedicated retirement visa programme for foreign nationals. Individuals wishing to retire in Canada generally need to qualify under another immigration pathway, such as family sponsorship or permanent residence through an eligible immigration programme. Applicants should ensure that their immigration status supports their intended length and purpose of stay.

Canada — Residency: Work Permit

A work permit is an authorization allowing eligible foreign nationals to work in Canada for a specified period and under specified conditions, issued through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Most foreign nationals require a valid work permit before beginning employment; permits are either employer-specific (tied to a single employer under defined conditions) or open (allowing work for most employers). Most foreign workers require authorization to work legally in Canada, and Canada's labour market is shaped by federal and provincial economic priorities, with employment standards generally regulated at the provincial or territorial level.
